Things I Found on the Ground
Miscellaneous treasures: shapely wire, the sole of a shoe, a piece of crosswalk, a wrench, etc. found on the ground while walking around town were used to create these 5″x5″ mixed media works on board. Santa Fe, NM 2016
Beauty Betty Bingo: Mother
This work investigates the texture of relationships, vulnerable landscapes, and myth through photography, mixing media, and travel. I explore abstract expressions of identity, family secrets, and the unconscious to communicate the unsaid, the forgotten, the history of memory, and its absence. The meditative process of sewing and the push and pull of threads document a layering of secrets, events, and emotions. I am a Primitive Seamstress.

Primitive Seamstress
This work was created at a self-directed Artist Residency at a delightful cottage along 30A on the Florida Panhandle in January 2015. Off season. I drove from Santa Fe in my very old and mostly reliable Subaru Legacy. Broke down on the way home (but that’s another story).
I bought a new but inexpensive and (relatively simple) Janome sewing machine for the project and taught myself how to use it once I arrived, hence the name: The Primitive Seamstress. Self-taught. Evolving. Exploring. My intention was to create 100 “pockets” from recycled materials, including memories from photographs and negatives of analog photography. Snippets of life deconstructed and put back together with found objects, stitch and ribbon. A sample of the 23 completed works on view below.
